How the Brain Forms New Habits, Why Willpower is not Enough

On March 23,2012 I attended a workshop on “How the Brain Forms New Habits, Why Willpower is not Enough“. The presenter, Dr. Brian King, shared the following information.

The best way to train new habits is to repeat the desired behavior until you don’t have to force it. It sounds easy enough but it isn’t. It is easier to continue with what we know.

If you want to make a new habit you must train yourself, with the following three steps;

  1. Observation - Copy them from a role model or someone in your social group or community
  2. Self-Efficacy – Do it, observe it,be encouraged and reduce anxiety
  3. Reinforcement – do it over and over again
